后来，宋振中一直在黄显声处学习。在学习知识的同时，宋振中还利用自己的年龄优势成为狱中党组织的交通员，为组织做了不少工作。但在1949年8月25日，蒋介石下达了分批处决“政治犯”的密令。1949年9月6日，小萝卜头一家倒在了血泊里。牺牲时，小萝卜头甚至不满九岁。重庆解放后，宋振中的遗骸被发现时，他的两只小手死死地握在胸前，里面握着的，是狱中老师送给他的那一小截铅笔。
